Gerald Chapple taught German and Comparative Literature at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and is a freelance literary translator.
He has published nearly 100 of Günter Kunert’s poems, along with prose works by Barbara Frischmuth, Ursula Krechel, Julie Zeh, Josef Haslinger, David Wagner, and Stefan Heym, among others. Some have appeared in Fiction, Modern Poetry in Translation, Agni, Grand Street, Osiris, The Southern Humanities Review, The Literary Review, STAND, Malahat Review, Antioch Review, and Words without Borders.
He has published translations of six novels with AmazonCrossing and of books by Heinrich Zimmer, Manfred Mitterauer, and Anita Albus. In 1996 he won a translation award given by the Austrian government for his translation of Barbara Frischmuth’s stories in Chasing after the Wind
