| Welcome to no man's land |
|
no
man's land features first-ever translations of fiction and poetry by some
of the finest writers working in German today. Ours is a virtual no man's
land between languages and cultures - one which, like the former no man's
land of the Berlin Wall, is now open for exploration.
The online magazine
has published 55 leading poets and fiction writers to date, including
special features such as dialect translations,
alternative translations and audio clips. Issue 1
also appeared as a print edition illustrated by Jim Avignon.
Events ranging from
readings and translation workshops
to a monthly "translation lab"
and the "Translation Idol"
contest are a vital part of no man's land, finding the fun in translation,
bringing German literature to new audiences and fostering author-translator
partnerships. While most active in Berlin, the heart of the German literary
scene, and home to a stellar community of English-speaking writers and
translators, we've also held events in places as far afield as Scotland
and Russia.
More than just a magazine, no man's land is an information resource for
literary communities in Berlin and beyond. We've compiled a wealth of
useful links including
an extensive list of literary translation magazines and the Web's most
complete listings of expat cultural initiatives and bookshops in Europe.
With its weekly open mike sessions, our Berlin partner magazine lauter
niemand has been a fixture of Berlin's alternative literary scene
since 1996, leading to the discovery of many young talents.
